There was a spirit wandering in the concrete tomb of Hanoi, a reminder of the painful and its blood-soaked history, the wailing over unmarked graves, in a distance, shrouded by the mist … there was Vong. And when it appeared over the liminality, black metal was finally sung in the desolated broken north land.

In the year of the pig, as people could still recall the death bells tolling, Indigo Tongue, as enigma and elusive as he appeared, proclaimed the birth of black metal in Hanoi with its first ever release, A Wander in Liminality. As eerie and haunting as it could be, Vong’s declaration of black metal calls for its triumph with all its hatred and raw desolation. The ghastly shrieks like waves, seeps into our consciousness, like the everlasting sleeps without dreams. The fable of Vong is laid in the tapestry of Vietnam’s mournful tragedy & in the paganistic and harrowing folk religion.

For some, the place of comfort is home, for others, it’s the left-hand path, the gallery of slaughter, the battlefield filled with the sounds of buzzsaw carnage. Rêvasseur are the dreamers of the Hanoi, but don’t mistake their name as pretentious melancholy, as the sleep of reason is nothing but. They dream a dream of hell, of triumphant battles, of carnal bloodshed.

Worshipping at the altar of the Swedish death metal gods, Rêvasseur has since become THE face of death metal in Hanoi, by sheer force of dedicated destruction, with an intense touring schedule that left a path of totality in Vietnam and led them to share the stage with titans of death like Cryptopsy, Undeath and Wormrot. After a remarkable start with EP In Doubtless Memory in 2021, Rêvasseur unleased their 10-hits-from-hell full length of Talisman, further pushed forward their own brand of melodic death metal, one that is defined by the soaring leads and face-ripping riffs of the Japanese axeman Satoshi and the stomping battle cry from New Zealander vocalist Liam W.

Let the head of the tyrant roll, let the body plunged deep by knife, 10000 cunts won’t survive! This is the death metal dream of Rêvasseur.

With the power core of Regicide – A.O and N1ppleR1der, Nuclear Stockpiles have clashed with some of the murkiest underground shows, as well as the who’s who of the international hardcore & grindcore scene like Shitstorm, Wormrot, Neuroot, amongst other. In the year of the scars, the genesis of Vietnamese black metal begun in the year 2003, when the ear-piercing rawness of Cái ác đến từ phương nam demo was unleased into the world for the first time. The creator of said tape, Loki, would later carve out a path of total destruction from that humble beginning. A new agent of death was born, and its name is ROT.

The title of said demo, translated as Evil From The South, is an aptly term to describe the long storied carnage of ROT. Now considered to be the most influential black metal act of Vietnam, ROT has cemented their bible of brutalities with fabled performances that demanded the blood shed of anyone who has experienced them, throughout the year sharing the stage with legends such as Nargaroth, Legion of The Damned, and many more. Their enduring legacy, despite various setbacks, culminated in debut full length As Darkness Burns, released in 2022, to commemorate the 20 years existence of the band. The album quickly gained acclaim for its simple approach to a genre that has since collapsed in its nadir. Black metal as an act of war, no nonsense, no pretentiousness, just pure-instict destruction in its most primitive form.

Born from a death of the self, from hopelessness and decay, molded by the silent scream of the damned souls, in the end of time, we can only sit still and look at the greyscale skyline as eventually we are consumed by the vortex of our own undoing. Mankind is fated to doom itself, and the final sound of the apocalypse is sung by the deathsingers, Dodssanger. From the ashes of Gottbrecher, Kyle Newman a.k.a Downfall and his own rag-tag band of misfits have risen through the murky water of Hanoi to brandish their own brand of depressive and hateful black metal. The culmination of desperation manifested itself in the form of their first album Reflection of a wretched soul, the fragmented glass shards that carve deep into the bleeding hearts of the sinful ones. Bleak in color, and powerful in its statement, depressive black metal as an artform of hate, blackened like tar. There’s only suffocation, and a void after.
