GAI: aesthetic nü-death cult Deriving its name from the Vietnamese word for “thorn”, GAI 荄 explores the human condition through their very own style “nü-death” combining elements of modern metalcore, deathcore and thall.

From the subterranean catacombs of France and beyond, House of Ygra is proud to present our next entry to the upcoming SCUMFEST... DVRK!

Formed in 2019, this enigmatic ensemble of musicians began as a solo endeavor before quickly turning into a full band. The darkened heart of their music is both multifaceted and multi-genre; DVRK blends deathcore with nu-metal, electronic bass, and progressive elements to create a sound unlike anything heard in Vietnam before! A relatively fresh signee with extreme metal juggernauts Season of Mist, DVRK released they debut EP “Infinite Reminiscence” in 2024. What else can be said about Obscura and their long-lasting legacy on extreme metal for the past 20 years? Setting the standard for technical death metal and still going strong till this day, Obscura has blazed their trail like none other in such way that transcended beyond the boundaries of death metal.

Founded in 2002 by guitarist/vocalist Steffen Kummerer, it has been a non-stop onward and upward relentless fight for Obscura. From the first album “Retribution” released in 2004, the storied career of the band begun and they charged head first into the ether with a legendary album run of Cosmogenesis, Omnivium and Akróasis, all now considered to be classics and helped contribute to the identity of technical death metal genre in the 2000s and 2010s, filling the void left behind by Necrophagist. At the eve of the upcoming ritual MASS:VI, House of Ygra have a quick chat with N.A.D.G.O.R., the war commander of Blood Serpent legion from Hanoi, Vietnam, about the reception of the band’s impressive debut album “Bestial Extermination” as well as their growth, abscene and return in the last year …

Q: Last June, we witnessed the return of Blood Serpent after more than a year away, what’s the band been up to and how did you feel about the performance?

A: After more than one year of not playing live, it sure feels great to bring back our hellish audial attack to Hanoi hell. We have been preparing our next infernal recording assault for the last whole year right after the release of "Bestial Extermination", this time it will be an alliance with one of our regional legions, which will be announced shortly. Recently, we have also included Necrosadist to our horde as live bassist, who brought a relentless and unforgiving attitude to our live ritual!

Q: Blood Serpent exploded to the scene right off the bat with with the nuclear hot “Bestial Extermination”, how did you see the response of the scene about the album both domestically and internationally?

A: It was quite overwhelming for us to be honest because we didn't expect the album to get so much attention from all over the underground. We deeply appreciate the support from everyone who listens and buys our stuff, both in Vietnam and internationally. It is really a pleasure and an honor for us to receive hails from kvlt underground figures whom we have followed and idolized for a long time.

Q: As someone who’s been active since the emergence of the Hanoi black metal scene, how do you see the way black metal is perceived by both the artists and listeners in Hanoi throughout the years?

A: I have been active in the Hanoi underground for less than a decade, which is a short time but the way our black metal scene has evolved is truly inspiring. I would say the audience has appreciated black metal and more broadly, extreme metal, more than ever as they seem to show actual interests in this dark art as not just for show, to which I am very glad as an artist. On the other hand, most musicians and artists have always been serious about the genre and 100% devoted to the cause, all the true ones will stay staunch while the false will be rooted out with time. I believe the Hanoi black metal scene will grow more given this initial momentum with new artists and new faces in the next few years.
